Yahoo on Mosaic: the Internet in 1995.
The upcoming transition of formal control over DNS from the Commerce Department to ICANN on October 1st gave me an opportunity to write about the privatization of the Internet for Jacobin. In the piece, I tell the story of how the Internet emerged from decades of public planning and billions of dollars of public funding, and explain how it was privatized fairly rapidly in the 1990s. I also explain why privatization wasn't inevitable, and how we might begin to reverse it.
