Forty years ago this August, a team of scientists from the Stanford Research Institute set up a computer terminal at a bar outside of Palo Alto and conducted what can pretty accurately be described as the first Internet transmission. I wrote about the experiment for The Guardian, and talked more broadly about how the Internet was invented, and how it works.
